Shifting from Praise to Fury: Conservative Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's name and image are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.

“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.

Some Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure

But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.

But a few are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.

“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement

Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.

Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Muted

However, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.

Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
